Thermal Waters of Furnas

The thermal waters of Furnas, located on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, are one of the region’s greatest natural treasures, combining the power of nature with the therapeutic benefits of its mineral-rich waters. This geothermal phenomenon, which attracts visitors from all over the world, is one of the island’s most important assets and reflects the intense volcanic activity in the area, marked by the presence of the Furnas volcano.

The thermal waters of Furnas emerge from natural springs and are rich in minerals such as sulfur, iron, and lithium, which give them therapeutic and medicinal properties. These waters have been used for centuries to treat various health conditions, including skin problems, rheumatism, and even respiratory disorders. Their heat and chemical composition are ideal for relaxation and revitalization, providing a unique wellness experience.

One of the most iconic places to enjoy the thermal waters of Furnas is Poça da Dona Beija, a thermal complex with several hot spring pools, surrounded by the lush nature of the region. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in the warm waters and benefit from their therapeutic properties while enjoying the tranquility of the environment. Additionally, there are other thermal springs in the area, such as the ones at the Caldeiras das Furnas, where it is possible to see the waters bubbling and steam rising from the ground, creating an almost supernatural setting.

Another must-see spot in Furnas is the thermal pool of Parque Terra Nostra, located in the one of the island’s most stunning botanical gardens. With waters heated to around 38°C, it offers a unique immersion experience where visitors can relax surrounded by the park’s lush vegetation and peaceful atmosphere. The yellowish tone of the water, rich in iron, combined with the serene garden setting, makes this place a true oasis of well-being. Furthermore, the park is an excellent spot to explore the rich biodiversity of Azorean flora, making the visit even more rewarding.

Among the wonders of Furnas, the traditional Cozido das Furnas stands out. This typical dish is prepared in a unique way, using the geothermal heat of the earth. The ingredients — meat, vegetables, and potatoes — are carefully buried in holes dug into the hot ground of the calderas, where the natural temperature of the soil ensures a slow and flavorful cooking process, resulting in a meal with an unmistakable taste.

The presence of the thermal waters also invites exploration of the surrounding area, where the vibrant green of the vegetation, the fumaroles, and the heat of the earth create an impressive contrast with the serenity of the lakes and natural landscapes. Furnas is undoubtedly a must-visit destination for anyone coming to the Azores, offering not only a relaxing environment but also a profound connection with the volcanic nature of the region.

In conclusion, the thermal waters of Furnas are a testament to the strength and beauty of Azorean geology, offering visitors a unique experience of health, well-being, and contact with nature in one of the most stunning settings of the archipelago.
