Your activity

This tour will give you an incredible walk along the north coast of São Miguel island. In Ribeira Funda you will pass several ruins of old mills and the beautiful Viola beach. With the local guide, learn about the stories, traditions and customs of the region, ending your walk in the parish of Maia. On your return, take the opportunity to discover the charms of Ribeira Grande with its unique views over the north coast of the island.

Itinerary

The trail starts at Ribeira Funda, on the north coast of São Miguel Island. Start by walking through a forest of cryptomeria and exotic vegetation, where you may have the chance to spot some bird species. Along the way, you will be in touch with nature and will pass numerous watermills and their levadas and several waterfalls

Cross the stream and continue the walk along which you can enjoy the panoramic views over the north of the island. Follow the trail that will take you to the beautiful waterfall next to Viola beach. Take the opportunity to explore the various mills in the area without forgetting to enjoy the beach with its volcanic sands. With the local guide, you will learn about various stories and memories reflected in photographic and information panels about the customs of our ancestors. 

Continue the trail through the coastline to the parish of Maia where you can enjoy a picnic lunch. After a short break, visit the Santa Iria viewpoint for an unforgettable view of the north coast and the Ponta do Cintrão. To finish, visit the main attractions of the Ribeira Grande city.

The transfer service (pick-up and drop-off) is included in this tour.

  • Pick-up will be provided at or close to the place of your accommodation. When the activity is over, we will drop you off at the same place. Consider this for the city of Ponta Delgada (for other areas, please contact us);
  • Approximate pick-up time: Between 8:50 and 9:10 am.

MATERIAL TO BRING

  • Comfortable clothes and shoes: sneakers or hiking boots;
  • Lightweight waterproof and windproof jacket;
  • Individual water bottle;
  • Small backpack: to carry your belongings and the lunch that is provided;
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat;
  • Medication: Any personal medication you may need during the tour (e.g. asthma inhaler, sugar packets for diabetics, anti-inflammatory gel, etc.);
  • Knee or ankle support: For anyone suffering from joint problems, it is recommended to use an elastic support for the best stability and to prevent further injury.

  • This activity is not recommended for people with problems with their knees or ankles. Please let us know of any previous injuries, medical conditions or health problems when booking;
  • It is recommended that you are in good physical shape as this tour sometimes includes walking on unstable terrain, muddy areas and slopes with gravel and slopes;
